Join Lizzy Humber and Eleanor Viola for a unique daylight performance platform designed to amplify the voices of local m/others and parents*. We share honest, funny and heart filled poetry, songs and stand up that throws open the doors to what it feels like to be a parent today.
These are a relaxed and lively spaces. The sharings are adult centred, but where children are welcome too. We design the space to be comfortable and welcoming to all, with comfy cushions, toys for the children, buggy park and programmed at parent-friendly times.
Everyone is welcome in the audience. So whether you’re in need of a bit of culture, a community or just an early lunch break – you are welcome!
We also invite brilliant guest artists to perform, previous including Holly McNish, Maria Ferguson, Liv Torc, Shagufta Iqbal, Kerry Priest, Ceri Baker, Clare Ferguson, Holly Ebony and Hatty Ashdown.
We also run workshops and courses in poetry, songwriting, comedy and creative journalling. So if your interested in exploring your voice, these are a great place to start.
*M/Other and Parents on the Mic - who’s included?
M/Others on the Mic is open to all parents and parents who are professional artists. Since 2025 we alternate our names to host two events, amplifying the voices of m/others and parents. We began as a platform in 2020 that supported mothers. The word ‘mother’ does not represent all people who birth or do the job of mothering. It is not only mothers that face barriers to inclusion. In 2025 we consulted with queer, trans and non-binary parents and fathers.
M/Others on the Mic is a performance space is open to all m/others - pregnant people, non-binary parents, intersex parents, queer mothers, trans parents, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, surrogate mothers, mothers without living children, m/others on fertility journeys, grandmothers and great grandmothers. This is not an exclusive list, and the use of '/Other' is intended to include not marginalise anyone.
Parents on the Mic is a performance space is open to all parents and carers - inclusive of pregnant people, mothers, fathers, non-binary parents, trans parents, intersex parents, queer parents, adoptive parents, foster parents, surrogate parents, bereaved parents, grandparents, great grandparents. This is not an exclusive list. If you are interested in taking part but don’t recognise yourself here, please feel empowered to get in touch.

At Exeter Library we will be on the 1st floor in the Rougemont Room. There is a lift and space to park buggies outside the room. There is limited space in the room, but if you have a sleeping child we will find you a comfy spot with your buggy.

At Exeter Library will have a baby changing area in the space so you don’t need to miss a thing. There is baby changing on the 3rd floor and in the children’s library on the ground floor. The room is inclusive for children, there will be mats and toys for children of all ages to get comfy, but please bring snacks and toys for your children as they need them.

Material is adult-centred, which can include moderate swearing. Subject themes that may cause distress will outlined before sharing and where possible communicated in advance with ticket holders. The space is carefully held by Lizzy and artists who sign up to share will be supported to choose appropriate content for the space.

M/Others on the Mic is a community organisation and project produced by Lizzy Humber, supported by Exeter Library and steering group of local m/others. The project has previously received funding support from National Lottery Community Fund and Arts Council England. We also work in partnership with The Hall Exeter, Exeter Phoenix, Alibi, Exeter Northcott and Barnstaple Library.
M/Others on the Mic was conceived in 2020, the first event was supported by Exeter Phoenix, Spork! and The Daylight Collective.
